Explainer Video Production Process: 6 Steps From Brief to Final Video
An explainer video is made in 6 steps: brief, script, voiceover, styleframes, animation and delivery. A 60-second video takes about 2 to 3 weeks. You approve each step before the next one starts, so changes stay small and cheap.
Overview
| Step | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Brief | We collect your goal, buyer, product screens and brand files | Fill in the brief, 15 to 30 minutes |
| 2. Script | We write the voiceover text and a scene-by-scene plan | Review and approve the words |
| 3. Voiceover | A professional voice records the approved script | Choose the voice and approve the recording |
| 4. Styleframes | We design key scenes in your brand colors and fonts | Approve the look before animation |
| 5. Animation | We animate every scene to the voiceover, with music and sound effects | Review the full video and send notes |
| 6. Delivery | We export the final files in the sizes you need | Download and publish |
1. Brief
The brief answers four questions: who is the video for, what problem do they have, what does your product do about it, and what should the viewer do next. Send product screenshots or a demo account and your brand guide at this step. Missing files are the most common reason for delays.
2. Script
The script is the most important step. It decides what the viewer hears and in which order. A 60-second script has 140 to 150 words. We also write a short scene plan, so you can see what will be on screen for each line.
Give all your feedback here. Changing a sentence in the script takes minutes. Changing it after animation can take days. See our script template for the structure we use.
3. Voiceover
Once the script is approved, a professional voice actor records it. You choose the voice: male or female, accent and tone. The recording sets the timing of the whole video, so it is done before animation starts.
4. Styleframes
Styleframes are finished still designs of the key scenes. They show the colors, fonts, illustrations and how your product screens will look. Approving styleframes means there are no surprises in the final video.
5. Animation
We animate each scene to match the voiceover, then add music and sound effects. You receive the full video for review. Notes at this step should be about timing and small details, not about the script or the design, which are already approved.
6. Delivery
The final video is exported in 1080p or 4K. Common extra versions are a 9:16 vertical cut for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, a 15 or 30-second ad cut, and a version without voiceover for autoplay on your homepage.
